Another piece of great news in the fight against cancer is a therapy that uses a common virus to infect and destroy harmful cells.
It’s a weakened form of the cold sore virus (herpes simplex) that has been modified to kill tumours.
The initial trials have taken place at the Royal Marsden NHS foundation trust. The virus injection, called RP2, resulted in one patient’s cancer vanishing completely, while others saw their tumours shrink.
Research suggests that combining multiple treatments is a powerful strategy, and virus therapies like this one could become a part of our toolkit to beat cancer
